Job Post: ANC NCPE Conservation Intern (Arlington, VA)

Arlington National Cemetery (ANC) seeks qualified part-time and/or full-time conservation interns from August 2019 - July 2020.  ANC intern(s) will perform hands-on examination, documentation, and conservation of the bronze and stone monuments, memorials, sculptures, and historic structures in our nation's premier military cemetery and shrine. The successful candidate will contribute to the preservation of the 1918 Memorial Amphitheater and assist the Cultural Resources Manager with various other cultural resources and historic structures projects. The position start times are negotiable.  Intern(s) will report to the Cultural Resources Manager at ANC. Based in Arlington, VA, in the ANC Engineering Division, Cultural Resources Management. All work will be performed on National Register properties. (1200 hours at $18/hr)

Duties: (1) Field inspection, historic fabric investigation, field documentation by photography and written notes, assists with on-going preservation, conservation, monitoring, documentation and treatment projects; (2) Tasks may also include preparation of short reports and data entry.

Requirements: (1) Actively pursuing a graduate degree or be a recent graduate in historic preservation or materials conservation of outdoor monuments and sculptures; (2) Prior experience with field conservation work on stone and bronze, conducting assessment reports, researching historic structures preferred; (3) Hands-on experience with field documentation, material assessment, computer skills, and solid writing skills are desirable; (4) Familiar with historic construction methods and historic preservation philosophy including the Secretary of the Interior's Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties and the Code of Ethics and Guidelines for Practice of the American Institute for the Conservation of Historic and Artistic Works; (5) Driver’s License and clean driving record; and (6) Capable of lifting heavy objects and working from scaffolding.
