Research Associate/Scientific Research Department

The Metropolitan Museum of Art, one of the world’s finest museums, seeks a Research Associate in the Department of Scientific Research. This role entails scientific analytical development and optimization tailored to the interrogation of complex cultural heritage materials under the supervision of a Research Scientist within the Met’s Scientific Research Department. Duties will include developing, implementing, and evaluating novel mass spectrometric (MS) approaches for the study of composite samples from artworks. This is a one-year full time position funded by the Richard Lounsbery Foundation. Salary range: $53,000 - $54,000 per annum.

 

Primary Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Assists in the development, implementation and evaluation of novel MS approaches for analysis of cultural heritage materials including but not limited to proteins, polysaccharides and lipids in collaboration with The University of Bordeaux, France.
  • Researches, plans, conducts, and documents, protocol development in collaboration with The University of Bordeaux.
  • Establishes and implements MS analysis protocols at the museum.
  • Develops and utilizes databases and applications to streamline the documentation and dissemination of results.
  • Fosters relationships with art conservators, historians and archaeologists from partner museums within an interdisciplinary research environment.
  • Performs literature reviews of scientific and conservation publications, proposing improvements to existing protocols and procedures.
  • Writes progress and summary reports, standard operating procedures (SOPs), and annotated bibliographies on related topics and activities.
  • Develops platforms and activities for public engagement, as well as writes scientific articles, papers, reports or books, as appropriate.
  • Other duties as assigned

 

REQUIREMENTS & QUALIFICATIONS:

Experience and Skills:

  • Demonstrated expertise in mass spectrometry and advanced liquid chromatographic analytical techniques (LCMS, MALDI-MS) (required).
  • Development and implementation of sample preparation, analysis methods and protocols for MS analysis of proteins, polysaccharides or lipids (omics methods) (required).
  • Development and implementation of sensitive methods and protocols for the evaluation of degraded or modified proteins, polysaccharides or lipids (preferred).
  • Experience in chemical interactions and/or crosslinking (preferred).
  • Implementing advanced statistical analysis methods on scientific data (preferred).
  • Development of process automation using modern database software and web-enabled tools (preferred).

 

Knowledge and Education:

  • D. in chemistry, biochemistry, engineering, materials science, related disciplines or equivalent experience (required).
  • Experience working in museum environments, specifically, either with or in proximity of art objects (preferred).
  • Strong command of both written and spoken English (required).
  • Ability to work in partnership on location at the University of Bordeaux in Bordeaux, France for up to one month. (required).
