Conservation Assistant – Part-time

The Conservation and Technical Studies Department at the Denver Art Museum is offering a paid, part-time conservation assistant position.  The successful candidate will be trained and guided by conservators to assist on a broad scope of projects in a range of material specializations to uphold overall workflow, support timelines, and institutional priorities. The conservation assistant will be adept at handling collection objects and present basic conservation skills, have sound manual dexterity, color matching ability, as well as develop an understanding of a range artist’s materials and methodologies.

The assistant will be trained and guided by staff conservators. Following direction and exercising initiative are imperative with a goal toward building competencies for application to a graduate-level conservation degree program. Education and experience include undergraduate studies in art history, studio art, chemistry, and familiarity with the operations of a conservation laboratory/studio.   

Essential responsibilities include execution of documentation photography and image processing; input written documentation into database as requested; retrieve objects from and replace to collection storage for evaluation purposes; assist with conservation treatment, exhibition preparation, and installation of collection objects. Maintaining inventory of supplies, maintenance and cleanliness of all conservation laboratories, workspaces, and equipment will also be essential. The successful candidate must have ability to work independently and with a team.

Proficiency with various computer programs (Word, Excel, project management programs, familiarity with database systems) and digital camera capture and transfer. Knowledge of conservation-standard materials and procedures is a plus.

The part-time position will range between 20 to 30 hours per week at a rate of $20 per hour. Candidates should upload a letter of interest, current resume, and three references by 5 pm, November 1, 2019 to:
