Overview

This position requires a highly motivated individual to work within the Pacific Northwest Conservation Science Consortium, a partnership with five museums and their conservation staff and is funded by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.  The position is based in the Chemistry Department at Portland State University, located in downtown Portland, Oregon, USA. 

Research/Scholarly Activities
Scholarly activities include research on specific works within museum collections with particular emphasis on their unique strengths, such as Native American, Asian and Regional artistic works. Products from scholarly activities include publications and co-/production of didactic or educational materials in collaboration with museum partners. Candidate must conduct independent research and to write scholarly articles for publication without significant supervision. Ideal candidate will have experience using more than one of the following instruments: micro-FTIR, micro-Raman, mapping XRF, Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy, Infrared Reflectography, Digital CT-scanning, GCMS or other MS techniques.  Other useful laboratory or computer skills include: synthesis experience, biochemical lab skills, database construction and management, OriginLab, IGOR Pro. Candidate must have a Ph.D. in chemistry, materials science or physics and an interest in visual arts. The ideal candidate will have at least one year experience working with museum conservators and curators. Candidate must have excellent written and oral communication skills and assist in arranging annual consortium meetings and reports. Candidate must be willing to travel to conduct research and to present results at conferences. The candidate must operate in a safe and ethical manner at all times, including helping to create a welcoming environment without discrimination.

Instructional Activities:  Candidate is expected to assist in the supervision of undergraduate and graduate students.
