Handmade Blue Paper Workshop in France

Starts:  Sep 9, 2019 09:00 (FR)
Ends:  Sep 13, 2019 05:00 (FR)
Associated with  Book and Paper Group

We are pleased to invite you to join the workshop on handmade blue paper organised together with paper maker Jacques Br?joux, paper conservator-researcher Thea Burns, master dyer Philippe Chazelle, paper conservator Leila Sauvage and book conservator Nadine Dumain.

This 5 day-workshop is a great chance to work in a paper mill, reconstructing traditional paper making techniques and comparing the sheets obtained with historical samples.

This year, we will focus on three techniques to make blue paper: rag colouring, pulp dyeing and sheet coating. For this week, we are very happy to gather the expertise of a papermaker, conservators and a textile dyer.

The goal of this workshop is to combine practice in paper making together with the examination of historical samples and the study of written sources. We would like to give tools for conservators, art historians, curators, students, researchers to identify different production methods and different uses of blue papers. Participants are encouraged to bring their own research questions and samples.

One nice detail: this week will take place in a 16th-century mill, in a very peaceful area of the South of France.
