Full Time: a position working 35+ hours per week. The Collections Care Conservator will report to the Chief Conservator and work as part of a team of museum professionals to ensure the long-term preservation of objects in Biltmore's collections. The Collections Care Conservator will undertake examination, documentation, technical analysis, conservation research and treatment of a wide variety of objects in Biltmore’s permanent collection with an emphasis on objects in storage. Other duties will include rehousing of stored objects, assisting with environmental monitoring, responding to emergency collection incidents, preventive care, maintenance and conservation consulting on all the collections, and collections research where appropriate.

Essential Job Duties
1. Assess collection display and storage conditions, make recommendations and implement plans to improve conditions for long-term preservation.
2. Perform conservation treatment of collection objects in accordance with the American Institute for Conservation’s technical and ethical standards including written and photographic documentation.
3. Assist with environmental monitoring within Biltmore House and other areas where collections are displayed and/or stored.
4. Assist collections management staff in the distribution of collections within storage areas with an emphasis on placement of collections based on environmental conditions.
Additional Responsibilities
1. Carry out administrative and/or laboratory duties as necessary.
2. Provide general assistance and support for leadership, the department, and company.
3. Aid in giving seminars and presentations on conservation and preservation topics.
4. Attend regular staff meetings and other company meetings as necessary and as scheduling permits.
Qualifications
1. Master’s degree in conservation from a recognized training program, with an emphasis on general collection care and/or preventive conservation.
2. Minimum of three (3) years of post-graduate experience in collection care. Equivalent combination of education/experience considered.
3. Demonstrated knowledge of conservation techniques and the effects of environmental conditions on a wide variety of collection objects.
4. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills are a must; able to convey information clearly and concisely both in written and spoken form: comfortable communicating conservation issues with a large audience with various levels of familiarity with the field of conservation.
5. Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite, Adobe Photoshop desirable. Proficient photography skills required.
6. Strong planning, time management, and organizational skills; ability to prioritize work and adapt as needed. Proactive, exercises good judgment; creatively problem solves.
7. Demonstrated commitment to delivery of world class internal/external guest service.
8. Works professionally and effectively as part of a team at all levels.
Physical Requirements
1. Excellent manual dexterity, great attention to detail, and a demonstration of hand skills and/or art/craft experience; good eye-to-hand coordination critical.
2. Ability to work in both a lab setting and in the field, standing/walking and/or sitting for extended periods of time as needed.
3. May be exposed to fumes, dust, dirt, pollen, chemicals, and/or other particulates; position requires the ability to wear a respirator as necessary when working with certain chemicals.
4. Will need to travel between locations on the estate; valid driver's license required.
