On Tuesday September 24, 2019, two articles of conservation interest appeared in the general press. In The Wall Street Journal, Lindsay Cook wrote about two laser scans of Notre Dame Cathedral made by Vassar College architectural historian Andrew Tallon in 2010 and 2012 which will be used to provide a baseline measurement for the building when the roof and spire are restored (“Twenty-First Century Gothic in Paris”  ). In The New York Times, Nancy Coleman wrote about the installation of an exact replica of Josef Albers’ “Manhattan” in the space for which the original was designed in 1963. Albers’ precise notes and drawings (and several pieces of the original) were used to guide the reconstruction (“A Modernist Treasure to Resurrect”  ). The takeaway: If you’re going to make a replica, it’s very helpful to have exact measurements.
