Guards represent the first line of defense against damage

In the September 22, 2022 issue of Hyperallergic.com, Dereck Stafford Mangus, who has worked as a guard at several museums, wrote about the dangers that private rental events hold for museum buildings and their collections be it from food and drink, inebriated guests, or  high decibel levels of amplifiers.  He notes that “Museum conservators can clean, fix, and repair art objects within reason, but there is only so much they can do. Guards represent the first line of defense against the accidental or intentional damaging of art and are, as such, an extension of a museum’s conservation team." When we think about allied professionals, we should remember to include the guards.  #ConservationintheNews
