The National Museum of African American History and Culture's primary purposes are to acquire, maintain and preserve objects which document social, cultural, political, military, technological and scientific developments in the United States related to the African American experience; to conduct research in the field of African American history, and to publish findings for all audiences.

This position is located in the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture’s offsite conservation collections facility. The multi-discipline shared conservation lab allows for independent and collaborative work between conservators. The successful candidate must be able to work independently and amicably with peers and support staff in a collaborative multi-discipline (objects, textiles, books, paper and photo) conservation lab environment with a fast-paced museum exhibition and rotation schedule. The candidate must have the skills to identify and provide expertise, consults  and  treatment as well as exhibition mounting options for the large photo-based collection.

DUTIES:
Works under the supervision of the Supervisory Conservator to:

  • design, propose, document, and complete proposed conservation treatments on a wide variety of photo-based materials within the collection following current museum practices and following AIC Code of Ethics and Guidelines for Practice;
  • provide identification, care, preservation and research on all historic and modern photographic techniques within the Museum's collections;
  • provide preventative care measures such as monitoring and evaluating environmental controls, integrated pest management, and emergency preparedness, and response and recovery of collections;
  • provide training and information to staff, allied professionals, interns, fellows, volunteers and the general public.

The applications will be evaluated further against the following criteria:

  1. Ability to communicate in writing in order to prepare written surveys, technical examination reports, treatment proposals, policies and guidelines related to the exhibition, handling and care of photo-based collection items.
  2. Skill in examining and treatment of delicate and/or badly deteriorated photographic processes.
  3. Ability to communicate orally when advising staff, visitors, researchers, and interns on photographic processes, conservation and preservation.
  4. Knowledge of the tools, supplies, equipment, methods and practices appropriate for exhibition, housing and storing photo-based collections.
