Our History

We have been working for more than 50 years to advance the preservation and conservation of cultural heritage. Incorporated in 1972 as the American offshoot of an international group of conservators, we have grown to almost 3,500 conservators, educators, scientists, students, archivists, art historians, collection care professionals, and institutions in more than 50 countries around the world, all of whom have the same goal: to preserve the material evidence of our past so we can learn from it today and appreciate it in the future. In 1973, we created FAIC, a 501(c)3 corporation, to serve as a charitable organization to support advancement in the field.

  • We're using the AIC Wiki to expand on our history! If you have material for the AIC or FAIC history sections, please send them to Bonnie Naugle or Rebecca Rushfield.

The American Institute for Conservation (AIC) is the leading membership association for current and aspiring conservators and allied professionals who preserve cultural heritage. We are a 501(c)6 organization.

We represent more than 3,500 individuals in more than forty countries around the world working in the domains of science, art, and history through treatment, research, collections care, education, and more. All of them have the same goal: preserve our cultural heritage so we can learn from it today and appreciate it in the future.

Our Values

Community: Our joy and strength come from working together; we are committed to fostering a welcoming, accessible, respectful, and active community within our profession and with the wider world through collaboration with new and existing partners. We believe that we are stronger advocates for ourselves and the field when we use our collective voice.

Professional and Personal Growth: We are dedicated to helping our members learn, grow, contribute, create, and thrive throughout their careers.

Sustainability: We advocate for sustainable practices to fight the impacts of the climate crisis, preserve heritage at risk, and improve our field.

Diversity: We embrace diversity in our membership, our partners, our initiatives, the objects and sites we preserve, and the collections and clients we serve.

Equity, Inclusion, and Access: We support equity and equitable decision-making for our members and our partners, and we strive to provide an inclusive environment and accessible opportunities for all members, especially those who are underrepresented or marginalized.

Accountability: We value good governance and financial responsibility; we invest in our members and are committed to doing so ethically, sustainably, and transparently. We are committed to listening to our members and responding to their input.

Our Mission

We are the national membership organization supporting conservation professionals in preserving cultural heritage by establishing and upholding professional standards, promoting research and publications, providing educational opportunities, and fostering the exchange of knowledge among conservators, allied professionals, and the public.

Our Values

Operational Resilience and Excellence: We embrace the strategic management of our organization, reflecting the responsibility to our mission, and are committed to doing so ethically, sustainably, and transparently.

Climate Impact, Environment, and Sustainability: We recognize the unprecedented environmental perils to cultural heritage and the need to support climate resiliency, to mitigate our environmental impact, and to be sustainable in our actions. We strive to advance sustainable practices to fight the impact of the climate crisis, preserve heritage at risk, and improve our field.

Partnerships, Collaborations, and Connections: We create and sustain private, public, and community partnerships based on trust and inclusivity that advance the preservation of tangible and intangible cultural heritage. We are the best advocates for the field when we connect and speak in a collective voice.

Equity, Inclusion, and Access: We welcome, engage, and support all voices, backgrounds, and perspectives to catalyze change in the field and foster a deeper understanding of our shared humanity. We support equity and equitable decision-making and opportunity. We strive to provide an inclusive environment and accessible opportunities for all partners and participants, especially those that are underrepresented or marginalized.

Our Mission

Our mission is to save cultural heritage for future generations, protecting it from decay and destruction.

We advance research and education, lead treatment and collection care initiatives, and deploy conservation expertise to where it is most urgently needed. Our work empowers conservation professionals, strengthens cultural institutions, and engages stakeholders, including public audiences, as we work together to protect cultural heritage for humanity.
