POSITION DESCRIPTION

The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art seeks a Media Conservator to join their progressive conservation department where conservators are committed to the care of the art of our time. The Media Conservator works collaboratively in the oversight of all aspects of conservation and collections management of SFMOMA’s media arts collection within all curatorial departments. Responsibilities include the on-going care of media artworks, including examination, conservation treatment, documentation, consultation and general collections care. In addition, special attention is provided by the Media Conservator to support and develop SFMOMA’s Media-Wiki as a multi-voice documentation tool integrated within the museum’s system landscape.
The Media Conservator researches, identifies and determines best approach to issues surrounding the active life of media works (particularly for new accessions), providing recommendations for and/or initiating appropriate preservation, restoration or media migration. In this work, the Media Conservator works closely with living artists, artist’s estates or foundation plus external experts.
The Media Conservator works collaboratively with colleagues across the museum. This role actively engages with the Curatorial departments, contributing conservation expertise on accessions, exhibitions, loans and collections research, and works closely with SFMOMA’s Exhibitions Technical and IT departments playing an integral role in the installation, documentation and preservation of permanent collection media art holdings. In addition to SFMOMA colleagues, the Media Conservator fosters productive relationships with artists, scholars, collectors, students, donors, the public and with colleagues from other museums.
Assistant, associate or full conservator position title and salary will be determined based on the candidate’s experience and skills of the selected candidate.
