Graduate Summer Internship: Paper and Photographs (Kansas City, MO, USA)

We are happy to announce a combined internship in paper and photographs conservation at The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art in Kansas City, MO. The internship is intended for students with primary focus on paper conservation; however, it can be catered to include more contents in photographs conservation if desired. Paper component will be supervised by Rachel Freeman, Associate Conservator of Paper, and photographs component will be supervised by Saori Lewis, Associate Conservator of Photography. The internship runs 10 weeks from June to August, and exact dates are flexible.

Responsibilities
Research, document, and perform assigned treatments under the supervision the Associate Conservator, Paper, and Associate Conservator, Photography. Assist the conservators with other duties including survey and organization of study collection as requested.

Minimum Requirements

  • Has completed one year of master's or equivalent program in Art Conservation.
  • Must be flexible, well organized and able to work both independently and collaboratively.
  • Demonstrates basic knowledge in theory and practice of conservation of works on paper.
  • Demonstrates knowledge in basic conservation photographic documentation techniques.
  • Demonstrates excellent detailed hand skills and research skills.

Opportunities

  • The intern will have opportunities to observe museum conservator's routine activities as well as their functions in a museum.
  • The intern will have opportunities to visit private conservation facilities in the region.
  • This internship offers a unique opportunity for a student to gain experience in both paper and photographs conservation. 

Physical Demands
While performing the duties of this job, the Conservator is occasionally required to stand; walk; sit; use hands; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs; balance; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; talk or hear; taste or smell.  The Conservator must occasionally lift and/or move up to 30 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color visions, peripheral vision, and depth perception.
