The Conservation Technician for the metalwork recoating project is a temporary (five years) full-time position that will report to the Senior Conservator of Objects and additionally work under the guidance of the Senior Director of Conservation and Chief Conservator of Paintings and the Associate Conservator of Paintings. The primary responsibility of the Conservation Technician for the metalwork recoating project will include, but will not be limited to, written and photographic documentation of the metalwork before and after treatment, removal of the existing degraded coating and application of a new coating following protocols established by the Senior Conservator of Objects. Responsible for tracking the project status in an established database. The Conservation Technician will work as a team member in the Conservation Department and may be requested to assist with additional collections care and special exhibition assignments as needed. The duties of the temporary full-time position will be based primarily at the Merion campus, but may occasionally be required to work at the Philadelphia and Ker-Feal campuses on a schedule to be established by the Senior Conservator of Objects with the Senior Director of Conservation.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Job Specific Competencies:

  • Performs examination and treatment of metalwork under the supervision of the Senior Conservator of Objects, and as approved by the Senior Director of Conservation
  • Responsible for written and photographic documentation of metalwork treatments; assisting with the organization of, and filing of, conservation reports and photographic documentation; data entry of status of project in project management database for the metalwork recoating project; in addition to producing paper copies for the conservation object files, the related treatment documentation reports will be entered in the electronic collections management database, The Museum System (TMS); responsible for the cataloguing and preparation of digital images taken for treatment documentation and attachment to the collections management database, TMS, in coordination with the Senior Conservation Coordinator
  • Coordinate with Registrar and Preparators for the deinstallation, shipment between campuses, and the reinstallation of metalwork in the Collection Gallery
  • Assist with studio maintenance in Merion by maintaining and researching supplies for the metalwork recoating project as requested
  • Complete an annual inventory of conservation chemical supplies and department supplies at the Merion campus inclusive of updating MSD; this information will be coordinated with the Conservation Technician in Philadelphia
  • Responsible for assisting the Conservator of Paintings with collection of environmental data in Merion conservation lab (i.e. downloading dataloggers and uploading data into Climate Notebook)
  • Responsible for assisting with additional collections care and special exhibition assignments in Philadelphia, as requested
  • Responsible for producing two collections-related social media posts per quarter; participating in lab tours and outreach projects as requested
  • Responsible for monthly reports to the Senior Director of Conservation and Chief Conservator of Paintings
  • Expected to maintain a clean, safe, and professional workspace
  • Performs other duties as requested

 Skills and Knowledge:

  • BS, BA, or BFA in art history, studio art, chemistry, art conservation, or equivalent
  • A minimum of two years’ experience in art conservation at an intern or technician level
  • Excellent hand skills and basic knowledge of current conservation treatment practices
  • Basic knowledge and experience with photography and digital imaging for conservation documentation
  • Good understanding and judgment in the handling of art objects, especially as pertaining to collections care and photography
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to work well with others as well as to work independently
  • Experience with collections management databases, especially Gallery System’s, The Museum System (TMS), highly desirable
