Job Description

1.       Functional Job Title:  Conservator

2.       Class Summary:  Position is responsible for working with various staff members within the Historic Arkansas Museum, as well as consulting and assisting with conservation projects with the divisions of the Department of Parks, Heritage and Tourism.  Position will care for three-dimensional collections-a comprehensive range of materials from all periods.  Close collaboration with curators and collections staff is essential.  Position reports to the director of the Historic Arkansas Museum.  The position is governed by agency/institution policy and state and federal laws.

3.       Scope of Work:

  • Responsible for the preservation, examination, documentation, and treatment of the vast and diverse object-based collections, in accordance with the AIC code of ethics.
  • Oversees all activities in the objects lab, including examination and analyzing objects in the collection to determine if treatment is required, making treatment recommendations, carrying out and supervising conservation treatments.
  • Responsible for the conservation and preservation of three-dimensional objects and sculpture and assists with related collections such as furniture and modern and contemporary art.
  • Plans and develops mission, goals, and objectives for the administration of museum programs and develops policies and procedures for museums and historic sites.
  • Conducts workshops for museum personnel on all topics of museum management and responds to questions regarding professional and technical museum issues.
  • Provides consultation and teaching services to private, public, and associate agencies/institutions regarding artifact and material conservation.
  • Conducts public relations activities to further the relationship with other museums.
  • May supervise a professional and administrative support staff.
  • Performs related responsibilities as required or assigned.

4.       Working Relationships:  The Museum Manager has regular contact with Historic Arkansas Museum  staff, as well staff within all divisions of the department,  professional organizations, potential donors/supporters, and the general public.

5.       Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of national, state, and local natural, cultural, and political history.
  • Knowledge of artifact presentation, repair, and reconstruction techniques.
  • Knowledge of supervisory practices and techniques.
  • Ability to assess the condition of museum and archival items.
  • Ability to clean, repair, and reconstruct museum artifacts.
  • Ability to research and write articles, papers, and reports.
  • Ability to work with databases, word processing, and other computing tools used on a regular basis.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently as well as successfully with others, e.g., Museum staff, volunteers, and diverse public constituencies.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.

6.       Required Qualifications: The formal education equivalent of a bachelor's degree in history, American studies, art history, or related field; plus three years of experience involving museum or archival conservation or related field. 

7.       Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree and completion of a graduate-level course of study in Conversation, or equivalent education and training.
  • At least five years of post-fellowship or equivalent job experience in objects conservation.
  • Familiarity with the types and materials represented in the museum’s collection of three-dimensional works of art, and a strong record of achievement in the field.

8.       Special Requirements

  • Broad knowledge of museum practices and collections management.
  • A pre-employment criminal background check is required.
  • This position is also subject to drug screening.
