  • CLASSIFICATION: Full-Time, Non-Exempt, Temporary (employment agreement lasting 8 weeks)

DETROIT INSTITUTE OF ARTS

General Summary

Under the supervision of the Objects Conservator, the intern will assist the examination, documentation and treatment of objects in the DIA’s encyclopedic collection. A portion of this internship will focus on the assessment and maintenance of outdoor sculpture. 

Essential Functions

  • Examination, treatment, and research related to the DIA’s comprehensive collection of objects, ranging from art of ancient Egypt to Contemporary sculpture and time-based media.

  • Assessments, preparation, and treatment of objects related to the museum’s active loan program.

  • Monitoring and maintenance of objects in the galleries and in storage.

  • Documentation and maintenance of outdoor sculpture.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education & Experience:

Must be enrolled in a master’s degree in art conservation from a recognized conservation training program required. 

Knowledge, skills and abilities

  • Thorough understanding of the AIC Code of Ethics and Standard of Practice.

  • Comprehensive understanding of museum care and preservation, essential to the role of the Conservation department in gallery and storage environments.

  • Knowledge of artistic materials and techniques.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills

  • Ability to work safely at heights on ladders and scaffolding.

  • Demonstrated ability to work independently as we all collaboratively with colleagues within the Conservation department and from other departments throughout the museum.

  • Ability to work occasional weekend and evening hours for special events (If needed).

  • Must be proficient in latest version of Office 365, including SharePoint, Word, Power Point, Outlook, and Excel.

  • Must be able to establish and maintain professional, productive and courteous interactions that promote positive teamwork. This encompasses going beyond giving and receiving instructions and includes but is not limited to (a) performing work activities requiring interacting or speaking with others; and (b) responding appropriately to constructive feedback or suggestions for improvement from a supervisor.
