The Midwest Art Conservation Center (MACC) is seeking an Assistant Conservator for the department of Preventive Conservation. This is a full-time, two-year position with frequent regional travel beginning in the spring of 2020. The position is responsible for training, preventive research, publishing technical leaflets, and site assessments. Activities include conducting assessment surveys; assisting in the development and presentation of educational workshops; consulting on collections care, preservation planning, disaster preparedness and other related subjects; writing articles and other technical materials; on-site disaster response and collections salvage; and assisting in preservation grant applications. The position works closely with the Director of Preventive Conservation, collections care professionals at institutions throughout the region, and the general public.

The ideal candidate will have an advanced degree in art conservation with strong interest and experience in preventive conservation. Additionally, the position calls for an individual with an enthusiasm for history, a valid driver’s license, and the ability to work collaboratively with professionals from a range of backgrounds. Note that this position does not include active conservation treatment or bench work. This is a 2-year, grant-funded position with a $45,700 annual salary, along with outstanding benefits including medical, dental, vacations, AIC membership, and professional development. The spring start and end dates are flexible and can be discussed at the time of an interview. The position is open to US citizens or those with legal eligibility to work in the US.

MACC is an independent, nonprofit, regional center providing comprehensive conservation services in Paintings, Objects, Paper, Textiles, and Preventive Care. The staff is collaborative, very collegial and works innovatively with the curatorial and collection professionals at hundreds of non-profit collecting institutions including fine art museums, historical societies, universities, Native cultural centers, city governments, libraries, archives, and the public. MACC facilities are located within the Minneapolis Institute of Art.
