A student internship with us offers specialized learning experiences in a museum setting, with options in many areas including conservation, education, public relations, registration, art, human resources, and more. Our internships are 10 weeks in duration, pay is $12.50 per hour with a $500 housing stipend.

Pre-program Internship
Emerging Conservation Professional Department: Conservation Pre-program Internship: Experience and Portfolio Building for the Emerging Conservation Professional (2020) Overview: The Conservation laboratory in the Buffalo Bill Center of the West is offering an internship to an individual with a demonstrated interest in conservation. This internship will be designed to fit the successful candidate. Projects will be selected, and training tailored to fill gaps in the student’s conservation experience. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to develop conservation treatment skills using objects from the Center’s collections. Research into materials and conservation methods is encouraged. Working under Chief Conservator, Beverly Perkins, the intern will perform a range of conservation treatments, develop skills in treatment decision-making, and work with collections. The intern will function as a member of the conservation team and participate in all other projects taking place. Interesting conservation projects will include taxidermy, ceramics, glass plate negatives, a leather toy tipi, outdoor sculpture, and many other possible treatments. Interns will be responsible, under the Conservator’s supervision for the examination, documentation, treatment proposal, treatment, and treatment report for object.

 

Book Conservation Intern
The McCracken Research Library in the Buffalo Bill Center of the West is offering an internship to an individual with a demonstrated interest and experience in book conservation. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to develop conservation treatment skills using books from the library. Working under Chief Conservator, Beverly Perkins, the intern will perform a range of conservation treatments, develop skills in treatment decision-making, and prepare condition and treatment reports with appropriate photo documentation. The McCracken Research Library is a special collection library within the Buffalo Bill Center of the West. The library’s holdings reflect the disciplines of the five museums of the Center, and include rarities related to the settlement of the West, to western art, and to native peoples of the American West.
