NOMAD Science is seeking an experienced conservator to join their salvage archaeology efforts in the field from June 8-29 in a remote region of northern Mongolia. Looting has destroyed much of the burial remains in the region ranging from the Bronze Age to Medieval periods. Our recent past efforts have recovered a wide variety of objects including textiles, foodstuff, metals, wood, bone, ceramic, and more. Human remains have already been heavily disturbed by looters, are skeletal (no soft tissues), and will mostly be handled by our bioarchaeology team.

We would like to continue to work with professional conservators in the field, who’s responsibilities would include collaborating during the planning phases of the project, implementing best practices interventions and stabilization techniques in the field, and instructing students/assistants. Though this is a volunteer position, NOMAD Science will cover the cost of airfare, airport transfers, food, basic accommodation, and of course field equipment including personal camping gear.

The team will be camping at a primitive camp site, with generators and solar panels for electricity, water fetched form a nearby stream, and pit toilets. A kitchen staff will prepare all meals. Conservation workspace will be provided in a dedicated ger (yurt).

More information on the project can be found at www.nomadsciencemongolia.com
