The Getty Conservation Institute (GCI), located in Los Angeles, California, works internationally to advance conservation practice in the visual arts—broadly interpreted to include objects, collections, architecture, and sites. The Institute serves the conservation community through scientific research, education and training, field projects, and the dissemination of information. In all its endeavors, the GCI creates and delivers knowledge that contributes to the conservation of the world's cultural heritage.

The GCI’s Buildings and Sites department—which undertakes and applies research on real projects to develop, trial, and demonstrate conservation approaches that advance practice—is seeking a Project Specialist.

Major Job Responsibilities 

  • Provides conservation experience to a number of projects within the Buildings and Sites department; primarily contributing to the Earthen Architecture Initiative.
  • Works to build the capacity of partner organizations and the broader conservation community through the creation and dissemination of information and training activities. Develops technical content and implements site-based capacity building activities for mid-career professionals including material knowledge and practical interventions for the conservation of earthen, brick, and wooden historic buildings and sites.
  • Manages activities of components of larger projects; contributes to architectural conservation projects, including documentation, assessment, planning, development and implementation of practical conservation solutions.

Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in architecture, archaeology, conservation or related discipline. Post-graduate qualifications in built heritage conservation or equivalent experience working in the field. Master’s degree in conservation preferred. Minimum of 5–10 years of international project management experience working in cultural heritage conservation Experience in project and construction management of historic sites and developing and delivering conservation training courses preferred.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Excellent interpersonal and verbal skills and the ability to work in small interdisciplinary teams. Excellent writing skills and the ability to contribute to and write reports and papers. Working knowledge of AutoCAD, InDesign, and Photoshop. Excellent organizational and time management skills. Fluency in a foreign language, such as Spanish, preferred. Must be available for frequent international travel. The ideal candidate will be a versatile, creative thinker, with a demonstrated ability to plan, develop, and manage projects, and a sound understanding of and experience in the physical conservation of buildings and sites.
