In the Saturday January 23, 2021 issue of The New York Times there is an article by Zoey Poll about Julia Brennan’s work conserving the clothes worn by victims of mass atrocities (“
Preserving Brutal Histories, One Garment at a Time” ). Among the articles of clothing Brennan has treated are thousands of garments found in a former Khmer Rouge prison in Cambodia and the garments worn by Rwandans who were massacred in a church where they had taken refuge. As she conserved each item of clothing, she let herself wonder about the life of the person who wore it, no longer willing or able to maintain the detachment she long believed was expected of a conservator.
