In the Thursday April 8, 2021 issue of
The New York Times, there is an obituary for Gianluigi Colalucci who led the restoration of Michelangelo’s Sistine Ceiling frescoes (“
Gianluigi Colalucci, Who Showed Michelangelo’s True Colors, Dies at 91”). While Mr. Colalucci, who graduated from the Istituto Centrale per il Restauro, came to the Vatican in 1960 and consulted with the Vatican Museum long after his retirement in the mid-1990s, the focus of the obituary is the fourteen year long Sistine Ceiling project -- with both critics and champions of Mr. Colalucci's work quoted. An obituary that takes up more than half a page of The New York Times! Conservators are getting some respect!
