Peering into the Paint”), Kenneth Chang explains the scientific principles behind hyperspectral imaging and provides examples of how the technique has been applied to the study of a number of famous paintings including Bellini’s “The Feast of the Gods”, Rembrandt’s “An Old Man in a Military Cap’, Van Gogh’s “Irises”, and the paintings in the collection of the National Gallery(Washington) credited to Vermeer. He notes that because the National Gallery was due to the COVI-19 pandemic, the museum was able to remove the very popular paintings from the walls for study. Should we consider this a silver lining of the pandemic for conservation?
