In an article in the June 29, 2021 “Science Times” section of The New York Times (“Peering into the Paint”), Kenneth Chang explains the scientific principles behind hyperspectral imaging and provides examples of how the technique has been applied to the study of a number of famous paintings including Bellini’s “The Feast of the Gods”, Rembrandt’s “An Old Man in a Military Cap’, Van Gogh’s “Irises”, and the paintings in the collection of the National Gallery(Washington) credited to Vermeer. He notes that because the National Gallery was due to the COVI-19 pandemic, the museum was able to remove the very popular paintings from the walls for study.
