The August 7, 2023 issue of The New Yorker contains a profile of the artist Lisa Yuskavage (“Bodies of Work: Lisa Yuskavage’s art shows it all”) by Ariel Levy. In it, Levy writes, “Yuskavage’s paintings are built to last for centuries. In the early nineties, she took a class on art conservation when her friend Jese Murry was dying of AIDS and she wanted to preserve his paintings. ‘Sometimes I think that’s the working class thing in me’, she said.” From the context, one infers that “working class” means manual labor. By that definition, is art conservation only a “working class thing”?
