It is always interesting to see what the outside world thinks conservation is about. In an October 7-8, 2023 Wall Street Journal review of the book The Boy from Kiev, a biography of the choreographer Alexi Ratmansky, the reviewer Moira Hodgson quotes author Marina Harss saying that Ratmansky’s restaging of older ballets “are like the work of a restorer: he analyzes, cleans, strips away, adds luster”. Well, yes and no.
