Hilda Abreu Utermohlen


Biography

Hilda Abreu Utermohlen is a retired paintings conservator and artist. She worked for 33 years in private practice in the Dominican Republic in the treatment of paintings and in preventive conservation of collections. Currently, she lives in Houston, Texas, where she has returned to her passion as a painter. After getting a BS in Industrial Chemistry from the National University Pedro Henríquez Ureña (UNPHU) and a Degree in Studio Art, Hilda Abreu Utermohlen received her MSc in Art Conservation from the Winterthur Museum/University of Delaware program. As a conservator, she pioneered the establishment of museum standards and conservation best practices for museum planning projects; co-created the first graduate program in Museum Studies in the Caribbean region (for the UNPHU); taught university conservation courses; trained museum staff; wrote articles for peer-reviewed journals, newspapers, and magazines; presented at professional conferences; served on the Boards of international professional organizations such as ICOM and APOYOnline; and gave numerous guest lectures on conservation topics. Hilda Abreu Utermohlen is a Fellow Member of AIC and IIC.
